Sidecars

I’m fairly certain I already covered this in a previous post, but last week was pretty rock-solid awesome. Between the running, the biking, the 5K, the soccer game, etc., I was both really really pleased with myself and really, really exhausted on Friday night. I did what the cool kids did and took a nap as soon as I got home on Friday night and then went back to bed at 10, and when I finally got up on Saturday sometime around 11 it felt pretty amazing.

Saturday I went over to my parents’ for a few hours to hang out and have lunch with my mom and decided to go for a run along the lake. It was a bit chilly, but not anything my cold gear couldn’t handle, and the sunshine and scenery was a welcome improvement from what I’ve been running in lately (although even the cloudy gray days were better than time on the treadmill). I miscalculated how long my blocks were, and figured that I had run about 4 miles when in reality I had only done 2.75. My legs were still a bit sore from Thursday’s pounding, though, so I figured it wasn’t really a bad thing. I also did the 2.75 miles at an average of 8:57, which was 20 seconds faster than my previous record, so I figure I came out ahead.

Saturday night I got together with a couple of my friends and introduced them to something a restaurant downtown refers to as a sidecar.

Not for the faint of heart.

I was first introduced to the sidecar at a bachelor party about a year and a half ago, and have had them a few times since at Christmas parties. They’re a particularly amazing drink, and unlike most bars which serve them as shots that accompany a drink, this sidecar is a drink unto itself. It’s got brandy, Citron, and lemon juice in it, and it is pretty amazing. It’s also pretty much straight alcohol, so if you plan on driving in the next hour or so, stay away from it. If you have the good fortune to not be the DD that night, though, by all means, do enjoy. Yes, they’re $10, but you are definitely getting your moneys’ worth.

Sunday brought pancakes and naps, because Saturday didn’t actually end until about 5 in the morning. Plus, the weather was practically made for naps that day: highs in the mid 40s and thunderstorms in the afternoon. I went into the soccer game last night ready to play, or at least thinking I was ready to play, right up until I started running. My legs still haven’t recovered from the last week, so I fell into my coaching role instead. We still lost, but we’ve gone from getting to put an extra guy on field to giving up only one goal in the second half. We might win a game yet this session.

Tomorrow is another 5K, and I’m thinking my legs will be ready for it by then. Other than that, this should be a pretty light week…hopefully.

Sidecars at Albatross (bar in Berkeley with free popcorn and boardgames) are only $5 and they are quite good! You should come see for yourself.
