The return of Cherry Man

Last summer I went to the beach…maybe twice. For someone who lives this close to the lake, that’s a positively shameful thing to say. Truth is I didn’t really feel like running around in a bathing suit.

Last summer, though, my best friend took me up with him to his place on Lake Charlevoix, which was easily the most awesome time I’ve had in years. We spent all of Saturday out in the sun and on the water, and despite applying liberal amounts of sun screen, I got the worst sunburn of my life. I could feel myself leaving layers of my skin on the bed sheets that night. Worse still, it was the most comically uneven sunburn ever, and really splotchy to boot. The whole thing earned me the nickname Cherry Man. Cherry Man didn’t really spent a lot of time in the sun after that last year.

Today though, I woke up around 10 and looked out the window and realized that today was not a day meant to be spent indoors. I had initially thought about doing a bike ride and then maybe a run because I’ve been lazy the last two days, but a couple of friends and I wound up going to the beach in Grand Haven instead.

There was some kind of kite festival going on at the beach, which was pretty cool to watch. The giant penguin and octopus and mothership kites were pretty cool too.

It was an absolutely perfect day. One that totally deserved a sunburn.

The sunburn wasn’t nearly as bad as last year, but my face got it pretty bad. I won’t be shaving for a few days. And, of course, the sunburn is comically uneven. There’s a burn line from my Runfos bracelet, one of my feet got burned but not the other one…and my torso remains as pasty white as ever. Not really what I was going for. I guess I’ll just have to do it all again next weekend.
