Yesterday I got trapped in an elevator at work for 30ish minutes. I’ve been stuck in elevators before, and if it weren’t for the fact that I had a pretty good feeling that I was going to get stuck, I would have lost faith in my theory that, much like being struck by lightning, you don’t get stuck in an elevator twice (usually).
When I wasn’t getting stuck in elevators yesterday, I was making the move upstairs. We set up a bunch of Herman Miller furniture upstairs yesterday, and I got another chance to put my skills at assembling the stuff to use (as an intern, it was my job to get desks set up/moved around. I could install this stuff for a living at this rate). The move, really, is mostly something to be filed under the “win” section: I’ve got a bigger desk now, something resembling a space of my own (I refuse to acknowledge it as a cubicle), three spectacular-looking 23″ displays, and the best part? It’s directly under the skylight. The only downside to the whole thing is that the coffee is now downstairs, along with a guy who moved down there who cannot make good coffee to save his life. I fear before long I may have a French press sitting on my desk.
Today was my parents’ 29th anniversary, and instead of getting them nothing (what on Earth do you get your parents for their anniversary, anyways?) I made what shall be referred to as The Meal, the pinnacle of my culinary abilities. I recall detailing it in a previous post, but here’s the rundown again, this time with 50% less wine:
Tomato-basil bruchetta on grilled Italian bread
Grilled garlic shrimp
Bourbon-dijon marinated flank steak
Fresh grilled asparagus
Garlic mashed redskin potatoes
Garlic-scented tomato salad
I had hoped to do a cheesecake for dessert, but I lacked both the experience and equipment to make such a thing (I also had no time), and I was immensely disappointed to discover that Meijer does not have cheesecake. If they do it’s hidden somewhere else entirely other than their freezer section, but I settled on a turtle pie-type thing, which wasn’t too bad. The potatoes turned out quite well; I am still in pursuit of the perfect garlic mashed redskin potato, but tonight was the closest I’ve ever come; smooth but with just the right amount of lumpiness.
What was the most complicated culinary achievement you’ve ever pulled off?
