Flirting with Spring

This has been a rough winter. Snow banks piled up 4 feet or higher along the roads (makes turning anywhere a lot of fun), ice hanging 6 feet off my roof, and somewhere between 3 and 4 feet of snow in the backyard. I’ve worked from home 4 times since January 1, which is 3 more days than I’ve worked from home due to weather ever, and we’ve had way too many days that either started below zero or never climbed past 10 degrees.

What I’m getting at here is that when the sun comes out for a couple of days and the temperatures break 35 degrees, even, perhaps, 40 degrees, you start walking around with your jacket off and driving with the sunroof vented. Another 5 degree and it’d almost be shorts weather.

I can remember back to when I was in college, and there was usually one or two freak days in February or early March when it’d warm up to 65 or 70 degrees. Snow would melt away, slide off the roofs, and then within two days we’d be back to 25 with six inches of fresh white stuff. This hasn’t been quite so drastic, but with a winter like we’ve had, 40 just feels downright tropical.

Tomorrow we’re supposed to hit 50, with a chance of thunderstorms. I’m opting to ignore the part of the forecast where things cool back off and we have another bout of 15 degree days by the end of next week. Spring finally feels like it might come, and it’s enough to give me some hope that the long winter is almost, almost over.
