One of the things I really look forward to at my job is the holidays in December. They’ve always held a certain special significance for me. My first real office Christmas party was two years ago, and it was a pretty awesome experience. Couple that with the customer breakfast we have on or around the Christmas party and you have the start to a long, slow slide into the two holiday weeks that I always recalled as being delightfully slow and laid-back.
Anyways. This year’s Christmas party was at the tail end of a major project for me, and I was more than ready for it. It was, in a word, awesome. Any time you start the night off with an open bar and then move into a private dining room for the party is a good time. By virtue of being single and some weird kind of luck, I wound up at the head of the table, and although the owner threatened to make me deliver a toast, I was spared an episode in public speaking I’d rather have avoided.
One of the fixtures of the office Christmas party are the gifts from the owner, which I really look forward to. That someone can come up with meaningful presents for 14 separate couples is pretty impressive, and he did not fail to disappoint this year. In the past, I’ve gotten board games (it’s more valuable than you think…I had none at the time) a wine cooler, and this year I got a Nespresso espresso maker. I’d say I did pretty well. If my grandparents get me a French press for Christmas, I’ll have assured my caffeine dependency for years to come. If they don’t…I’ll probably get it anyways, because I’m more a fan of the classic shot in the dark than the more traditional and calorie-laden lattes. Plus Joe’s Bar can add coffee to the lineup, adding another layer of sophistication to an otherwise elegant bachelor pad.
But the party was a major success. I left feeling quite happy, and very lucky to work there, and that wasn’t the booze talking. I think the most awesome thing about my job is that while I may work with people who occasionally rub me the wrong way, we can all still get together once in a while and have a great time. I hope that everyone at some point in their lives gets to experience the same thing.
